I've been playing guitar for almost a year and still only have the basic stuff(guitar, amp, picks, that's it). I've been looking at some pedals and I think that by a month from now I'll be able to buy one, but I don't know what to start with. Can anyone tell me. I've been looking at wah, reverb, flanger, tremolo, and chorus ensemble.

here is a pretty good pedal to get its DigiTech JamMan Looper Performance Loop Pedal  it lets you play a rythum and recordes it so you can play lead over it,  http://www.zzounds.com/a--1786721/item--DGTJAMMANLPR

Personally, I would get more usage from a chorus pedal. I could use it for playing leads or rhythm and basically never need to turn it off.

If you can afford it, get something like the Digitech RP90. That should give you room to find your sound as well as let you experiment with things such as a wah pedal.

That's pretty good but I think I can even afford the rp1000 which I've seen great reviews

Well, anything even similar to that like a Line 6 Floor POD would be acceptable.

It depends on what type of music you play and what you want ... if you play metal you can buy a Boss Metal Core or Metal Zone ... reverb and delay is always great to have if your amp doesn't have these ... chorus and distortion is another ... I don't use wah's since I play rhythm but they are a staple for anyone's arsenal

if you are looking for bang for your buck, i would go with a multi effects unit along the lines of the digitech rp series, the boss gt or me series, or the line six floor pod series, especcially if you are going to be using a variety of sounds. My personal reccomendation is the boss gt series if you can afford it and are willing to spend a few minutes to figure out the menus to set it up. the cosm modeling engnes are great.

if you only really use one sound, then i would suggest getting a few pedals to create that basic one sound. Personally, i only really use my amps distortion and clean channels as a base for my sound, and then a delay/echo for my leads, the occasional wah, and the ocasional chorus for cleans. given that i only really use those, i could very well only buy those pedals.

depending on your current amp and guitar situation, i might recommend buying a new amp or guitar if you are looking to improve your tone. A pro grade pedal through a beginners grade amp will not sound as good as a mid level guitar through a mid level amp with no pedal.

that is just my personal opinion however. I have always preferred pure amp tone than using pedals. my only real neccesities are a solid humbucker equipped guitar and an amp with with a decent amount of distortion and at least a 3 band eq. ideally i like a delay in the effects loop. but i have always liked a simple sound.

anyways, it all depends on what you are looking for, whether it be flexibility or simplicity.
