I started to play about 5 months ago because I LOVE music.  I have never been musically inclined with an instrument, though.  I tried guitar when I was in my early 20s but didn't have the time or patience.  Now that I'm 60 and retired, I have both time and patience.  I have a convenient "coach" to work with me.  He's been at it for over 40 years.  I look at it in a number of different ways: it's a new hobby to occupy my time when I can't get out on the lake, it saticefies my craving for music, the technical side saticefies my engineering background and I now have somehting I want to be GOOD at.  I envy people that have a special talent.  I hope this will be mine.

I've tried off and on to play the guitar many times, and I don't think I have just one reason I started.

Of course, my family had a huge impact--my father was in a blues band (The Silvertones) and all my life I've been surrounded by musicians. My first and middle name even have to do with music! My first name is Dyna, from Dynaco (after an amp), and my middle name is Linn (after a turntable). (Even though my father died in 2003, my mom has kept in contact with the band, so I still AM surrounded by musicians, since she takes photographs for all of her friends that play music.)

I've always loved singing and I always thought it would be awesome to be in a band myself. But being unable to play an instrument and having no real confidence in my singing, I never have formed or joined one. So a lot of why I started playing is so I can join or start a band. I played the flute in middle school, but I found after a year that the flute just wasn't for me. It's seemed like over the years the only instrument I keep coming back to (not including my voice--I'm constantly trying to improve my singing) is the guitar.

I inherited my dad's guitar, and I absolutely hate the thought of leaving it unplayed. I've got to learn how to play it, so that someone's playing it.

I remember watching Australian idol..
seeing those idols gave me a thought of maybe i should turn into guitar.
what also made me want to play is that my secondary school was full of musicians,
and i thought why not start on a new instrument instead of staying with the goblet drum..?

i told my mum i wanted one, and soon enough i got a classical..
and i have never let go of it..
it also made me turn into getting myself a keyboard and learning that too...
ive written songs, but never made chords for them..
hopefully some day i will..

right about now, i am the only musician in my family....
it makes me feel special..smile
music is one of the few things that makes me happy..
wouldnt live without it..

anyways,
i think thats my story..

When I was a boy in 4th grade, a salesman came around to our little country school selling musical instruments, ( no, it wasn't "Professor" Harold Hill ) he asked each of us what we wanted to play, and then he came around that night and tried to sell the folks what we wanted, and that was a guitar. Dad said no, because he had already spent $5 on a trombone from Mr. Watson at church. I remember when Dad had bought it for my brother, we went out to Mr.Watson's barn, he had it covered with straw and hay on the barn floor. So I got to play a trombone in 5th grade band class instead of a guitar. So 40 years later, I am still wanting to play a guitar, kids are grown, and it's now my turn. So here I am, feeling my way around to self learning how to play. Take that Dad!

When I was just a wee lad of 7 or 8 I heard this amazing sound coming from my older bro's room. I ran into his room and excitedly asked what that sound was. He says to me, "why? Do you like it?" "Yes I do," said I. Then he says " come on in then and listen to the Beatles with me." I was floored, and learned shortly thereafter about the instrument that figured prominently in that music and knew right then that I had to play one. And eventually after my folks got tired of being bugged about it, I got my 1st guitar and began my quest of learning.

well my mums pretty musical playing the accordian and piano to a high standard.
and i also played piano and double bass so when i went to my mates in the village and his dad had a guitar that he didn't play too much i was just like we have to learrrrn!
my mate was also pretty musical and we just used to mess about and learn chords.
me n my mate just used to jam on that and another acoustic all the time.
we would both take a guitar home and learn a song n then the next day teach each other what we had learnt.

this eventualy led onto guitar lessons and stuff...

I actually started on a trumpet in grade school about the 5th or 6th grade and quit when it interfered with my baseball "career".  In high school I had a friend that played guitar and used to watch him play absolutely fascinated by his fingers moving on the frets.  When another friend had a band and I used to watch them practice it was always the guitarist I paid attention to.   When I did get a guitar a righty strung for a lefty it frustrated me trying to learn on my own and transpose the chords to lefty.  Now in my 50's I decided that all else be damned I was going to learn guitar.  Got one for Christmas 08 and haven't put it down since.  I also wanted to impress the girls(wife, daughter, and dog).

Hey Buzz........You and I must be from parallel universes.  I too played baseball from 7 years of age through high school until I threw out my arm.  By then it was college, carreer and family.  Now that I'm retired and will be 60 VERY shortly, I have the time and patience.  My coach got me going last March on his "banger".  Now if I don't spend at least 2 to 3 hours a day, I don't feel right.

...Elvis was "big" but I couldn't sing to save my soul, but local-boy Duane Eddy (he was from Phoenix, AZ, I was in Yuma, AZ) and was hitting it big and making cool sounds, so I went for the guitar.

...I still can't sing, but I'm getting better on the guitar.

I picked up the guitar hoping to create that lovong, profounddly intense sound that'll make a cripple man walk, a quiet man shout, an ugly girl move sexy.  There is no sound like it, c'mon, you listen to Hendrix play that solo in Hey Joe and tell me you dont feel like reaching out to your guitar and come close to that sound?

He not busy being born is busy dying.

Cavett-..well when you mention the National Anthem and talk about playin it in any unorthodox way, you immediately get hate mail....
Hendrix- I didnt think it was unorthodox, I thought it was beautifull.....but there you go

I've been imitated so well I've heard people copy my mistakes.

I actually wanted to play because I like to make music and I don't want to be stuck only knowing 2 instruments and a program for the computer that makes beats(FL studio 6)

OK,
Although Hoss likes to remind me of my age, and that I may be to old to remember why I started on guitar. I will first say "Hoss, you aint exactly a spring chicken either".....LOL

At an early age ( 6 or 7 ) my mother used to drag me to church every sunday.  I wasnt interested in the church part, but I was however fasinated by the organ..  A year or so passed, and eventually my parents agreed to start me on piano lessons..  I didnt care for that much, as I wanted to play the organ.  In the mean time (being the only kid my age in the neighborhood (all being much older or younger)). I didnt have much else to do but listen to the radio.  I quickly noticed that the most prevalant instrument in the rock music I heard (all AM radio back then) was the guitar. I decided thats what I want to play.  At the age of 11 and with money I earned from my paper route, I bought a used electric (cheapo no name) guitar from the dude two doors down the street for $10.00 U.S., and learned on my own from there.  My parents were not going to spend money on guitar lessons, thinking I would just get tired of it like I did with the piano. Anyway that was 1968.

Jim

A really interesting thing to come up at a dangerous time like this! (learning modes, notes, interval/music theory, how to read music/notation, etc etc, LOL!)
I really cannot remember why I began to learn, or took an interest in learning guitar.. sad
I guess my interest in rock music began with Guns N Roses...pretty much, around early 2007, when I was around 15 years old. It opened a whole new world for me smile. Then I literally jumped from Megadeth, Metallica, to AC/DC, to Iron Maiden, etc etc. It was unbelievably quick!
Around mid to late 07 I became interested in playing guitar, like my idols....their techniques and skills all amazed me..i guess... then I started learning acoustic guitar, out of my own wish...with a tutor, b4 coming to US. Was with him for like 2 or 3 months, and he basically taught me some chords and the chromatic scale....
Now I learn electric guitar on my own...lets see how far I can go myself!
