I always wanted to learn ... I finally said there's no better way than to jump right in ... once I learned my first 3-chord song I was hooked

There's no better feeling then when you're playing your guitar and it's making your soul sing

I thought this post went really well.  It's interesting to hear about "older gentlemen" like myself taking up a new venture later in life.  I don't ever expect ot catch up to the "kids" with their metal music.  I'm just enjoying playing accoustic for myself and the idea of learning something new.  It keeps the old "brain box" going on something else after 30 years as an engineer.

Dean...that's me...these past five years or so of trying to make something of guitar instead of starting and quitting ever 10 or 15 years has
been the best yet...and hey, don't sell yerself short...you could catch up to plenty of 'old timey' git players...picture yourself onstage with
David Gilmour for example...shoot, anyone can play that stuff.

J/K...

No i'm not...

Ok, yes i am but dang, we can do it if we try !

HOSS...............ADVENTURES!?!?!!?  The only adventure I have with guitar right now is getting my fingers to do what I want them to do.  I always thought I controlled them.  BOY, was I WRONG!!!!  They definitely have a mind of their own.

Newbie- the learning process is the adventure, every time you pick up your axe, you learn something different, you play ariff in a different way,yo add a few notes or take away a few notes. the entire process is a journey to the way you present your music to yourself and the people that listen to you..

Well, I was in the Navy floating off the coast of Vietnam jamming on a BROOM to Electric Ladyland, I had Voodoo Child down to a tee! One of my shipmates who actually played guitar caught me jamming away, eyes closed, lead guitar "face", the whole works! His laughing still echoes in my ears 40 years later! So later that month we pulled into Hong Kong harbor, I went to a music store and got my first guitar. For some reason I bought a 12 string, it turned into a six string in about a week. He showed me some chords ( there was no Chordbook.com.....hell, no computers!) I was learning blues harmonica at that time, so I just switched my "ears" to guitar instead of harmonica. I would put on a record and try to figure out where on the neck they were getting all those cool riffs. That was back in 1969. I wish I could say I got the guitar to "get girls", but I was on a ship full of guys! It kind of worked out that way when I got in my first band in '72. Oh yea, I still jam "Voodoo Child", except now on my Strat!

My "coach" did a stint in Nam, also.  He had his '65 Gibson B25E shipped over there so he could keep "in tune".  He was a medic in a field hospital over there.  Now his B25 is his pride and joy heirloom that he only plays on special occasions.  When he plays at some of the local "establishments" up here in Northern Wisconsin, he mostly uses his Cort accoustic/electric or his Martin.

Good to see you back Harpman, I too did some floating off that coast. Tin can style.
I got my Gretsch knock off in Sasebo but i kept a cheapy classical in the berthing compartment to pluck away at. Found a sorta teacher over amongst the elec techs...he taught me a few chords too and we'd sit on the locker tops playin' Gloria while some other troops would sang...wow...tons of memories flooded in when i read yer post.

Last Hendrix that was big before i got out in late '68 was 'Watchtower'...i remember a kid (kid, hell, i was a kid) from MI i believe it was, screamin' 'no reason to get excited' along with the radio below decks and playin' air guitar.

Cheers,

Old Tele Man, I was on an Oiler, USS Kawishiwi, we kept going in circles waiting for ships needing fuel, I was a signalman so I was on watch outside, I swear I think I remember hearing a plane and could not see one, didn't know if it was ours or "theirs"! Thanks for looking out for us! Any of you "old guys" ever jam with the bands in Olongopo City, Subic Bay? The club owners owned all the instruments....Gibsons, Strats, Fender amps. The guys playing them got paid...ah..ca ca. I bought a Goya Telecaster in Sasebo! How do I post a picture?

Harpman, you hit another memory cell....i remembered sitting in on drums and it must have been Subic...i know i was in at least every 'club' in Olongopo City, that's for sure. What do we have here, an 'Uncle Sam's Canoe Club' reuniion or is it just a South China Sea Yankee Station thing? Heh, heh.

OTM, i'm trying hard to remember the drone but tin cans were noisy aft and there wasn't much reason to be topside after dark, especially when there were so many 'games of chance' going on throughout the ship after the movie.  I somehow mangaged to be there for Tet and even got sent to NK for picket duty during the
Pueblo affair.

Hi guys,

First I would like to commend and thank all who served for our country.  I know Nam was'nt a popular subject, and you guys got treated like the enemy when ya got home.  I lost a few freinds over there myself.  I was classed a 1-A  in high school.  One day I get a letter in the mail from the "selective service commision",  I expected a ticket to the party.  Apon opening, I discovered a 1-H staus card.  I wasnt really to up on how the draft lottery worked, but a freind who was, told me I missed the show by about 20 numbers. In a strange way I would have liked to have done my part.  But on the other hand, I'm glad I missed the boat for that show......

Thanks again to all of you....

Jim

69JAG.....I know what you mean JAG.  I missed the call-up by 2 numbers and wound up with a 1-h.  BUT, hats off to all who did serve.  I too lost a few good friends over there.
