Yeah.
Hey Keiko, kinda need to know where your at to help you move along....but presuming some things, have you gotten better at pent scales and chord changes plus have you been learing movable chords i.e. bar chords? Also, did we talk about starting a song book in a binder of songs you know and have printed off the internet plus tabs of metal you want to learn? And how are you at reading tab please. Kinda need you to bring us up to date so we can help you make it scream
Cheers,

Lol Montanamoose....
Well yeah kinda figured that. i'm really good with my rhythm, pent. scale is perfect ( i have goodmuscle memory with that). Powerchords are good.I'm still practicing on changing chords so thats a little problem. Um. Speed is getting up there too. But bar chords....eh it could be better.
Then definitely work on the bar chords, especially the grand barre shapes up and down the fretboard. You'll watch vids and you'll notice the cats are all rockin' with bar chords...heh...hey and don't be shy to ask questions...i started here knowing virtually nothing....still know little as far as i'm concerned but i read a lot and took lessons from OTM...worlds away from however long i've been here....
Chord changes...try picking two or three chords from a song you like and just do it every practice...also, reminds me...start a routine when you practice. Did you like my idea in the other post about a song book? It's worked for many here.
Cheers,

Yeah i will try to practice the ...barre chords (hate em') and the songbook idea isnt half bad. i would actually love that.
Go for the songbook then...you'll get into the finding and printing of stuff you like...learn new chords, riffs etc. Yeah, everyone hates bar chords at first...then once you catch on...you'll be smilin' and tearin' that thing up...faster than that slowpoke Synster Gates...yep...
GuitarZen
...what about hendrix
Oh now yer talkin' Keiko...now that guy could play guitar...like it was part of him. BTW...gotcha...was just kiddin' 'bout Synster Gates...got your attention though...heh...
So yeah, find some Hendrix tabs...Hey Joe with chords over lyrics to start then find the tabs for solo...put it altogether and please become the next guitar
god for us all....we'll road for ya if you don't forget about us !

If i became that good. I'd probably still be on here learning.
The greatest Never stops learning.
For a metal guitarist, it's paramount you learn alternate picking ... building up speed w/alternate picking will allow you to play those fast metal riffs without tiring your wrist out ... I can down pick fast so I don't really work on my alternate picking (which I should I know)
yeah, alternate picking is a must! HOWEVER!!!! if you can down pick a metal riff then that is awesome!!!! but thats for when you've become awesome at alternate picking because to down pick a metal riff you potentialy have to pick twice as fast to get from down stroke to down stroke apose to down up down up.
this also depends on the riff which is probably up to personal opinion.
i like metal riffs that what i like to call 'chugging rhythms' which to me would just be a short syncopated rhythm which may or may not include triplets, sex-tuplets, semi-quavers, demi semi-quavers.
and example of this could be (althouh not a very good example) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DI9yLegwsY first one that came to my head lol. to me a good chugging rhythm should also include a riff, rather than just a 'chug' which to me, this is jst a bit of a 'chug' rather than a good 'chug' in a riff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q96pdhy5bdg also a good chugging rhythm with a riff over the top but still not combining the too (my heads not working right tonight[late shift] so i'm not thinking of one off the top of my head)
also i don't really know what you define as 'metal'
you said about synyster gates in another post so i asume you like a7x.
i think there stuff like unholy confessions from waking the fallen and stuff from sounding the seventh trumpet are there most 'metal' songs, however i don't there riffs are as 'metal' as i would call metal. perhaps unholy confessions is quite metal and a good song to learn! it is very fun to play!
lamb of god are one of my favourite metal bands ever.
they combine 'chuggin rhythms' and just mint riffs!!!
and example of metal riff could be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOWB6rmSd4I
the technique of sweeping may also be used for example this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIn_wMDt5j4 the chugging rhythm behind this is a bit better which the chords changing but it's still not in a riff ![]()
a lot of classical influence is used in metal sometimes. for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsOksdEauP0 a lot of famous metal guitarists tend to be classicaly trained (synyster gates was a jazz guitarist at MI though =P)
and this is as much as my tired little head can take for now.
any questions or anything n i'll try and answer. (also, obviously there are other types of metal and many many more techniques and styles, i have barely scratched the surface here.)
