anyone covered fade to black by metallica? i need help with the ending (third) solo. theres this fast lick, almost at the beginning of the long solo, thats real hard for me to play. so basically, u bar 7th fret of the 1st and 2nd string, full bend & play 9th fret on 3rd string, play 1st string (7th fret), and pull of 10th fret to the 7th, 2nd string...if u played the song and know the solo u know what im talking about....
any tips on how to pick that lick? what picking methods are used? and still play it sounding clear and quite fast, exactly as its played?
sorry but as u all might know, trying to describe guitar playing in words makes it more difficult. i dunno how to copy/paste tab, or if its even possible!!

Pick each of the 3 strings 1 time only and practice it, practice it, practice it...another alternative would be to learn a similar but easier riff 1st. Maybe something like this:

e---16p12-----16p12-----16p12-------------------------------
B-----------14---------14--------14---------------

and so on.

hey zuhairreza got a question

The main rythm (you know right after the intro solo) is that all finger picking, normal picking or fancy mix of the two cos i cant decide?

It is better to try and fail then never to try at all

wiggs, that rhythm, if I understand what u mean, is NOT fingerpicking. Its normal picking, but in live videos, I have seen James doing up-picking on that part....although it seems as if normal picking can also be used...good luck playing the song!!! smile

I never learn the solos as written when covereing a song I learn the basic melody and structure of the solo but as far as which scales I play and what licks I use i improvise...Idont even play my own solos note for note...its whatever im feelin at the time.  Um but for that lick the key pull offs..Pick the 7 then the 10 and pull of to 7 then pcik the 9 its quite simple and a very classic Rock lick. Very typical of Hammets Style
