...best at what? ROCK, Country, JAZZ, Blues, or what?

Wes Montgomeery gets a nod for Jazz...
SRV gets a nod for Blues...
Chet Atkins gets a nod for Country (although Vince Gill and others a darn close)
Jimi gets a nod for Rock, but certainly not in all the other catagories.

...and the DEVIL said: "...yes, but it's a DRY heat!"

Personally I really like Angus Young and Eddie van Halen. But Jimi is THE MAN.

What a subjective subject, we all have our favourites but as to who is the best? I am an admirer of Hedrix and his personal virtuoso style but would he have continued on to greater heights? Dave Gilmour can move my emotions and I could name a few Dylan tunes where he outstrips the 'best' (and who did the lead on Desolation Row?). Clapton's simplicity can be voluminous and if you listen to Robert Johnson you have to wonder what he may have done had he lived past 26 and was in the modern age as many of 'our' blues licks come from this artist/era. The Winter brothers are good (not a personal favourite) and then you have unknowns such as the Youtube clip linked on another part of this forum.

Play with your heart and play what you feel, that is what all of these great guitarists do/did.

Hi everybody, new to this board. I just want to put my vote in who I think is a great guitarist. Bruce Kulick. He has played with KISS most notably but has done a ton of studio work for other artist. I think that John 5 is pretty good also.

I'm a big Slash fan but still think Jimi is the best, I am constantly amazed with the sounds he makes with guitars.

I have plenty of guitar heroes, but for deep feeling, incredible swing and low down funk, I gotta vote for Hubert Sumlin. The core Howlin' Wolf band from the 50s really knocks my socks off as a unit.

just gonna throw out that we really cant pick a best.. everyone has there own style, and everyone will have different opinions. Just like froghunter said,
"Play with your heart and play what you feel, that is what all of these great guitarists do/did."
oh.. Andy Mckee, Don Ross, Pat Metheny, Antoine Dufour. Just some wonderful artists i thought id throw out.

Cheers, Mike.

I agree with Mikedirmio
its all about emotion and how it effects the audience. That being said, im going to throw John Petrucci, Alex Lifeson, and John Frusciante into the discussion

Welcome to the best guitar board charlie, you're right...all about emotion and what the artist does for the audience. Then I'm just a beginner and I haven't heard many guitarists that are professionals that are bad....I think that would stand out too much and they wouldn't make it to a stage in the first place...I'm know I'm not ready, but I will be. Have fun here !

there are alot of aspects that go into playing guitar.  For me raw physical ability and technical prowess play apart in ones 'virtuosity." Soul, melody, musical knowledge, note choice, even ones abilty to improvise certainly plays a role in who is "best."  therefore I would say Paul gilbert possesses all of these qualities in abundance. Now there are those who will say gah but hes a shredder there is no music in that and no soul and blah blah blah blah...but that is not true...yes while at times he plays blistering shred solos without ceasing and its just a frenzy of technique and theory....he can also play amazing blues..classical....wonders into jazz territory in more than one song..and has amazing tone.....he gets my vote.....

go to youtube and type in yellow matter custard check his 5 minute improv solo at the end of guitar gently weeps....its amazing...heart soul technique...everything you need to make you great all in one solo

that would be this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9QL0Jkb … re=related  and not the other one

I would have to say Slash.
He's amazing.
Though I would also have to agree with the Hendrix mention.
