Hi all!

I'm a guitar player who wants to get good.  I've been "playing" for about 12 years... but I've never been "good".  Allow me to explain.

When people hear me play they usually are amazed by what I can do with this instrument, but all I do is learn other people's music and play it well.  Muscle memory helps a lot here.  I'm really into finger picking and classical guitar.  I'm hoping to expand my horizons a little bit and learn some scales and solo techniques.  Ya know... find my own sound.

Actually learning how to play vs. picking out other peoples stuff is my goal, but I have no idea where to start.

If anyone has any ideas/tips for me they'd be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Becky

man playing for 12 years....I cant even begin to fathom what your ability must be.....me trying to explain to you how to play.....hmm.....good how? Good at writing? Good at soloing???  Guitar is so diverse its hard to break down that far (at least for me). I would start with the many resources that exist on the wonder that is chordbook.com...... learn some chord progressions I think to start with as simple as you need it to be...learn what a i iv v is and ii v i there is blues and jazz for ya right there if you want to venture to heavier music styles I suggest learning the dorian and phrygian modes and there application.  And then picking patterns descending and ascending 4s and then 6s and then triplets..then get creative maybe do like ascdending 6 and descending 3 and ascending the scale in this pattern very soon it will start to sound alot like music....  This is my opinion....It might not work for you but maybe give it a try ya?
