I bought two fuzz pedals recently (fulltone '70 and the dunlop jimi hendrix fuzz face).  Overall they both sound great for their respective fuzz, but I tend to pick up radio interference at different levels throughout my home.

Is there any sort of solution to this?

are you using a tube amp? if so i get Cb radio interference with mine i was told to rap the tubes in tin foil this helps cut the signal interference. also another potential interference is threw your patch cords if you are using low quality unshielded patch cords you will get interference as these cables like to act as antanne.

Every rule has an exception. Especially this one.

Crick is absolutly correct about the patch cords.
If you have everthing hooked up, and turned up to volume.  Step on, move, or tap on the on patch cords. If you hear banging or scratching
sounds,  then replace the patch cords with "Good Quility" ones.  Be prepared to spend a few extra dollars, but its worth it. Those effects are pre-amplifiers, that boost the signal before it gets to the amp, and in doing so they amplify any noise the cables are picking up too.

I once had an amp pick up a Spanish speaking radio station. It was quite disturbing until I realized what was going on.

Having a cable coiled up can pick up signals too.

If you need cable suggestions; DiMarzio cables, the ones with the fabric braiding on the outside, are really good cables for a great price. My roommate has one and it easily stacks up to my much more expensive Mogami Gold. They're very solid and durable, and I've never heard a peep of microphonic noise.

Is wrapping foil around tubes really a good idea? My preamp tubes are all behind plates or half buried in chassis metal but I doubt I could ever get myself to give that a shot.

Sha, and All

The following is a link to a pic of a fender Delux Reverb chassis like mine.  Notice the metal covers on the 6 preamp tubes on the right (bottom).
They are metal, spring loaded, twist lock shields.  Tin foil can serve the same purpose in a pinch, such as a live gig where you suddenly discover
your in a heavy RFI area, and the cords are not the source.. I dont recomend this as a fix all and not for anyone unfamiliar with electronics to attempt.

Cable-wise,  Beldon makes good cable if your into making up your own cords.

Jim

Edit: Here is another link to a Delux Reverb restoration.  If you scroll down you will see a pic of the tubes without the metal shields.

Update: Well I have upgraded my cables (especially the patches, which were cheap to begin with) and that has cut down the interference dramatically.  I am still picking up hints of a radio station. (it plays some classic rock; so I guess that's as cool as interference can get smile  )

The problem seems to be when my signal is broken up, and may be a problem with the amp.  I will try shielding the tubes to see if that works.

Thanks for all the help.

i was told by jag who will verify that you should just use a little bit of tin foil at the bottom of the tube not to totally encase the tube as this will lead to heat issues obviously. hope that kills the unwanted signal for you.

Heres the shields for the small 9 pin style preamp tubes like "12AX7's".
Requires drilling 2 holes and pop riviting the base to the chassis.

Since these are removable, you can leave them off in places where no noise is experienced as the amp may exhibit a brighter sound without them. But when in an area of heavy interference, you can place them back on. Take one shield and try it on each tube one at a time. If ya kill the noise by just shielding one tube thats good enough, if not just keep adding shields until it gets as good as gets...

Wow that's a fantastic site!  I will definately look into those shields, plus I saw a whole bunch of other goodies that caught my eye.  My wife is going to be so ticked!

Ha!

Cool
Hope it works out for you. If you take that route, be very careful drilling the holes, and make sure you get all the drill shavings out of the amp.. Use a vacume.....

The wife will get over it eventually........lol

take care
