Guys, as you all probably know, I am still kinda beginner to guitar. I have been playing for several months (like 7 or 8 months), and I have mostly been practicing switching chords quickly, downpicking/alternate picking exercises, practicing fingering with a metronome (increasing speed gradually), and covering my favourite band songs (like Metallica and Megadeth, etc).
My question concerns music theory and "learning scales". Both of these are important and I obviously want to know these two. Upto now, I know "some" music theory, the very basic stuff, like the notes and symbols, intervals, etc, and in case of scales and modes, I know none! So I have decided that I should make time for learning scales and music theory whenever I sit down with the guitar.
What is the best approach to learn scales and modes, etc etc? Should I learn theory first or scales first? Both are related I think, so what should I do? Bear in mind that I don't know ANY scales and have very basic knowledge about theory.
Help!

should i memorize all notes on the fretboard =yes , learn all your major scales, like C-major

                    E-----------7=B--------8=C----------------------10=D-----------------------------

                    B--------------------8=G---------------------10=A-----------------------------

                    G----------7big_smile------------------9=E-----------10=F-------------------------------

                    D---------7=A-------------------9=B-----------10=C--------------------------------

                    A---------7=E---------8=F----------------------10=G--------------------------------

                    E--------------------8=C-ROOT---------------------10=D---------------------------------

NOW IF YOU TAKE THAT ROOT NOTE AND MOVE IT UP OR DOWN LETS SAY 6TH STRING FITH FRET AND YOU USE THAT SAME PATTERN AND YOU HAVE THE A MAJOR SCALE, HOPE THAT WILL HELP TO

Use this link:   http://social.chordbook.com/guitar/cboard/viewtopic/708
laid out for you there is the Cmaj/ Amin relative scale in all the modes. Now remember these patterns because they never change no matter what key you are playing in. Only thing that changes is the position on the neck. for instance, D maj scale is same patterns but shifted up 2 frets. Hope that helps you out
