I am just starting out learning guitar and honestly it seems that there is so much to do that I don't know where to start. Should I learn my chords and practice switching between them or learn my major scales first?

good question  i like the idea of learning chords first as this will send you on the way to playing more full sounding songs rather than the sound of one note at a time ofscales, but eventually i think it comes down to learning both. perhaps focus on chord for awhile but learn the C major scale and practice it when your hand gets tired of chords as it surely will.
welcome to my favorite web site chord book the people here are considerate and knowledgable. also bare in mind these are only my ideas on this subject as i am sure more good answers will come pouring in shortly. by learning chors you are essentially learning parts of scales too.
are you on an acoustic or an electric or both?

Every rule has an exception. Especially this one.

Hi Dan, and welcome.

I started by learing the Major, minor, and 7th chords first. That way I learned to change them rapidly and utilize them to learn many songs. That kept my interest.  Scales, etc came later...   either way, it takes time, patience, and alot of practice. Dont try to rush it, and most of all "keep it fun". Its
very easy to get frustrated, when you feel that you are at the point of frustration just put it down till the next day.

I'm not sure how old you are, but I started this GIT thing less than a year ago at age 60.  My coach got me going with chords and laying out simple songs wth those chords.  That's what has kept it fun for me.  Whatever your modivation is for starting this, KEEP IT FUN and you'll progress faster than you think.  The people on this site are great at giving very good answers and advice to any git question.

Welcome to the forum and KEEP IT FUN,

Dean

When I started I learned a mix of both chords ad scales.  The chords make it fun to learn songs.  the scales help by giving you much needed dexterity to play tabbed songs and solos.  Good luck.
