often times the b string is capable of cutting through the nut of your guitar as with all strings, but the b in particular because it is the first unwound string. so is the nut in good condition or has it cut into it to the point that it is killing the sound of the string? that is one possibility it could also be set up issue or string issue as in it simply needs changed.
as for soft blues tone i turn the mid and the high down real low on the EQ and the bass up almost alll the way and set the reverb to about 7or more depending on taste. also i use bridge pickup and tone knobs on guitar set to thier lowest settings.
this setting kills alot of the twang of the guitar but renders a soft smooth sound can get kind of muddy but i like that sound.
hope that helps and welcome to the forum.

Thanks Cricketrider, I will check out all your comments, just as an opinion, do you think the epiphone Les Paul would be better suited for mellow blues ??

tough to say most would agree those are both pretty good blues machines(axes). the LP is easier to set up that is for sure. and i aslo think that LP are easier to play that those big ol hollowbodies, as for which is a better blues machine? i like them both but i would prbably lean to a LP but not for any particular reason.
to me the blues comes from within the real blues machine is you! a jackson dinky can play the blues too! i mostly play on a SG clone that i got on the cheap.

my favorite guitar is a les paul, but a vintage gibson costs so much and i don't have the money. i mostly shape my tone with amps and pedals (but if you have the money to spend, go with the les paul) and i can get used pedals pretty cheap used. btw, what lineup would you use if you had a danelectro fab tone, boss ds-1, boss od-2, a chorus, and an echo if you wanted to sound like randy rhoads (mostly a crazy train sound is what i want)?

Treble-4-6, Middle-5, Bass-7-10. And for a metal tone, the Gain all the way up. But your also gonna want a chorus effect and an analog delay
to get that sound of what sounds like multiple guitars cause Randy would layer the guitars over 3-4 times to get a heavier sound.
