Welcome to chordbook tripleA23, well it's the old 'patting the head, rubbing the belly' trick. once you can do one of them unsconsciously, you can add the other. To simplify i'd say that once you're playing guitar unconsciously you'll be able to start singing along. Things that helped me get there were looking at the lyrics with the chord notations above the lyrics, then after a while i could hum the melody.
It helped a lot if i chose songs i already knew well. I'm no good at memorizing lyrics but melodies stick somehow. At first it was all i could do to keep up with the chord changes, so it was forget about trying to sing. Now i look back and what seemed very difficult became easier as i went along. No worries, you'll get it eventually.

I don't worry aobut singing. If I tried to sing with my playing, my wife would bannish me to the garage and the animals up here in northern Wisconsin would congregate to see what was dying in my yard!!!!
I DO hum along with my playing. At first I just "sang" in my head. It doesn't work. You need to verbalize as you play. By at least humming, it makes it easier for me to pick up the chord changes at the right timing for the lyrics. All the songs in my notebook have the chords above the lyrics, but subtle differences are not there until you verbalize/hum.
Keep It Fun,

I am proficient at doing this, and I will tell you it takes practice. You have to master chords before that, and I can't sing while playing a solo at all. Not that most people do anyway, except Weezer xD

Playing and singing is only as hard as you make it. play simple chords at first, hear the melody in your head and sing to the melody you hear. do easy songs at the beginning, don't try to be an expert first time out.practice, practice ,practice, is the whole secret. Have fun with it. Welcome to chordbook, Nice having you. drop by the chat room and say Hi.

Hi triplea23. I took a seminar recently where they taught a good way to work it out and start getting somewhere with your practice quickly. The idea is that you play the tune while singing one word at the beginning of each measure. Do the same singing the whole song and playing the first strum or pluck each measure.
It's working well for me.
