Since my return to the guitar world I have been pondering whether to take the plunge on an electric to accompany my acoustic guitar.  I have been cruising Ebay andI see a nice Les Paul Studio for sale at a nice price.  Right now there are no bids and the item closes in less than 24 hours.  My dilemma is:  1.  I know nothing about electric guitars
                   2.  Gibson's description states that the neck is rounded and thick.  I was not blessed with big hands or long fingers but can play my acoustic fine with the understanding that I will never be able to wrap my thumb around to low E string for any blues playing.  So how thick is thick?
                   3.  The devil over my shoulder says to buy and if I don't like it resell it, is this a good idea?

The item comes with it's hard case.  So, should I take the plunge?  As of this writing, there are no bids on this guitar.

typically acoustics have a thicker neck to support heavier strings. i had an epi LP standard +top and the neck had a great feel for my average hand size. there is no substitute for holding the axe in your own two hands this is the main problem of ebay guitar shopping. but you are correct that you probably can get her sold again but beware you will loose some serious value in the shipping charges. and remember it is a guitar buyers market as it is very soft right now with modern manufactures cranking out good guitars. so once you get one it is alot like a car it is yours therefore less somehow. hope that helps .

Corden,

Another thing to  keep in mind about Les Pauls, is that they are heavy. I think the "recording" model is the heavest of the lot. The action is good if set up correctly, but not really to my likeing. I guess im just spoiled by the skinny necks on my electrics.

I have always liked the sound of a Les Paul, however, I find them to be bottom heavy and uncomfortable after a long playing session.I have never owned a Les Paul, but several buddies have them and swear by them. A lot goes with your preference , such as : sound, fret-board action, and the music you play.Keep us posted  on your decision.

Thanks all for your input.  For now I have decided to for go the temptation and do more research.  Of course being on the road has made it easier to resist bidding on this item.  :-)

For now I am going to continue my practice with my beloved acoustic until I am certain of what fits my soul.

good call that takes will power!
in my case the guitar called me and now i am hooked on a cheap version of a gibson SG. so in one regard i am lucky cause i got this cheap guitar that i absolutely cannot do without. on the down side i don't have a flashy axe with a prestigious name tacked to it.
its funy i never even knew i was an SG guy i always associated it with hard rocking angus young (not that thats bad) but it certainly isn't my particular style.

I might be a little late on this post, but...

If you are still considering the LP Studio, let me offer some insight.  I own a LP Studio and absolutely love it.  I bought it a couple of years ago and the honeymoon is still ongoing.  The tone is incredible, real thick sounding; and with the gain kicked up the PUP's give me that real "hot" sound perfect for all types of Rock.

To me the neck is a bit tighter than my strat, and makes me play with a little more precision because I have to.  As for the size and shape of the neck.  I believe it is pretty standard C shape and not as wide as my Strat and makes it easier to play a little faster.

I love the way it is built.  I have played the Epiphone versions and to me they are good, but not in the same league (let's say maybe double or triple A ball compared to the Majors).  It is built solid and it shows it in it's tone.  And like all great guitars it keeps in tune despite heavy use and bending (of course after each session every guitar needs a little tweaking and fine tuning).

For my money, it was a great investment for a "working" guitar.  If you want the looks go with the Standard, but the sound with the Studio is the same just less expensive (notice I didn't say cheaper) Hope this helps.

Rock on!

A Mo

Thanks, the auction for the guitar ended on Saturday.  I think my next stage is to hang out at my local Sam Ash and try some different models to see if anything stands out and wants to follow me home.  The guitar was advertised as only played 2 or 3 hours and the starting bid was $700 which I though was pretty good since other Studio's were going for $1000 + on separate auctions.  I know Ebay is hit or miss, but I have gotten some good deals on other items if you know what you are looking for.  Right now I don't.

Thanks for all your input, and I am open to any other suggestions.
