So lately I've only really been playing in D standard and Dropped C tunings. Needless to say I don't need four guitars for that, so I've been thinking of dragging three of them down to the local guitar center and trading them for a used Gibson Explorer they have. There are a few others, like PRS guitars that I'd love to have but I can't justify buying another guitar when I have so many. I could probably go with a new Explorer as well since I have a half stack that I don't use either.

The thing is one of the guitars I'd be getting rid of was a limited run Ibanez V shaped guitar. It's not particularly valuable, but if I get rid of it I won't be able to replace it. They were only made for Guitar Center and only for a few months. Each store got two and I managed to score a deal on this one.

Anyway, what do you guys think? I'd personally love to go to just the quarter stack and a few guitars instead of five guitars and two big amps.

Sha,

I made the mistake of selling 3 vintage guitars to buy my Jaguar back in 69.  Had i known then what I know now, I would have found another way to come up with the money for the Jag.  Once there gone, ya can never get them back (in most cases).  I currenty have 3 gits, and 2 amps.  They are all vintage gear,  and I will not part with them for various reasons EI: value (sentimental and monetary), and special things that make them somewhat unique.
I know its a hard decision to make, But I (myself) would find a way to obtain the new git without sacrificing any of my current gear.

Just my 2 cents worth....But the final decision rests with you.

If I can offer my opinion...NEVER give up a guitar.  EVER.

Maybe I am a sentamentalist, romantic, or whatever...but I love each one of mine for different reasons (and I own 5 currently).  I am not a pack rat or anything, but they each have their own function, voice, and being.

Seriously, even my Squier Strat (not to degrade anyone who is playing one).  I saved it from my burned down Fraternity house when I was in college; it has a sentimental value to it.  My Dad bought it for me because I mentioned that I wanted to learn, and for that, it is priceless for me.  The head stock still bears the smoke damage from where the gig bag was opened just a touch.  Luckily it was winter in Illinois and when the fire dept. sprayed water through the windows it slightly covered my gig bag and froze protecting my axe! No joke...it is now part of my story...just like the other 4.

If your financial situation allows, save 'em all...I say.  And one day you can tell THEIR story.

Rock on,

A Mo

I know where you're coming from, but to be totally honest I thought of the sentimental value that they have, and more or less they're all guitars that I wanted at one point but no longer really see much value in. The Alexi I will never get rid of though, for a great many reasons.

I thought about the Ibanez V being somewhat unique and if I got rid of it I'd likely never be able to replace it. But then I thought, "Wait a minute, there are plenty of guitars that would easily replace it." My GAS list is far too long to truly miss that guitar. The BC Rich I stopped digging when I got tired of seeing all that abalone. The EC1000, well you can still get those new.

Perhaps the most compelling reason is that I already did it. I'm officially down to two guitars and let me tell you, this one is a looker. Translucent red finish and all. It's not too heavy and looks great. I fired it up against the Mesa for a bit and I could instantly say it sounds as good as it looks.

I really like the idea of simplifying down to two guitars that I honestly want to play.

And now for some pics..

Sorry for the poor quality. I'll try to get some better ones going when it's light outside, especially of the wood's grain.

that is damn beautiful i'm tearing up just a bit OK the moments past
that is so sick. That gibson is beautiful i have also lusted after an explorer
but i was able to get my hands on an epiphone explorer and man did i
see and feel the difference i plugged it into my same set up didn't change any
setting and it was deep and heavy and the tone was great.
and i thought my low end ibanez GAx70 was the bees knees now its like a red headed step
child in comparison to my explorer.

i have a couple of guitars that have sentimental value like 2 and i have like 8 which
are neither worth much monetarily or emotionally to me but there mine and if i ever
got a chance to trade up the extras i have in a heart beat it would be done

at least my mom thinks i play good

I understand the other guitar being like a red-headed step child. My other guitars were like that compared to the Alexi (the black and yellow one). The Explorer is easily on par with it if not a bit better.

I didn't change anything on my amp either right off and had the same experience. I have since turned the gain down some but that's about it. That 500T pickup has such a high output. It seems easily hotter than the EMG in the other guitar. I'm considering putting the Blackout back in it just to try to match it.

Pictures of your Explorer?

yeah ill post its not as nice but ill get it up as soon as i can email the pictures from my cell to my photobucket and so
on. i tried so ernie ball heavy bottom sliky tops and it killed it so i took the A and D string off and put regular slinkys and
and left the 52 string for the E so it sounds pretty tough again

Killed it how? I used to use the EB 10-52s but prefer DR and D'Addario by a long shot. D'Addarios seem to buzz a little less so I tend to stick to those. I think it's because the A string on the D'Addario set is 42 where it's 44 on the DR.

The Ernie Ball just sound dull to me compared to the D'Addario and DR. I'd definitely recommend them if you like how the 10-52 set feels.

yeah just left the strings sounding muted
i play lead in one song  that my friend wrote
which makes me feel special as i am a rhythm guitars
who has one strum and i based it my little riff off
the A#/Bb blues scale and when id play on the A and D
strings it was just muddy and didnt cut through the other instruments
and i played it on my ibanez which has reg slinkys and my explorer
when it had regular slinkys with the same pedals and settings and it came through
clear. i checked my winding job and the pegs and nut and bridge and i strung it
right so thats why i changed the A and D to reg slinkys from the heavy bottems

at least my mom thinks i play good

That is a pretty sweet looking explorer. Good control layout and no pick guard. The string through looks less conventional but I bet it adds quite a bit to the sound.

It's what you'd expect to see if an Explorer and a Kelly had a child.
