Hi guys,
Im a newbie to this site, but its proven its mettle, so I shall remain.
Now on to serious..ness.
I know afew open chords and such so I wanted to move on to scales. I go to the Guitar Scales page on the website and see that there are many different "Variations" a single scale. Is it just a matter of picking the one that works for you or does each variation need to be learned in order to move on to the next key?
I really appreciate the help..and this is only one of the many questions I shall ask.

no you dont have to learn each individual scale. the variations just show different ways to play the same notes.
basically, you can play the same note in multiple places on the neck.
eg,
play the tenth fret on you lowest(thickest) string, fifth fret of the 2nd lowest, and open on the third lowest. they should be the same note, if you are in tune.

In my opinion if you want to eventually play some leads, then learn the scales in all portions of the neck. The notes are the same, but eventually you can connect the patterns for the different scales, ie major, minor, pentatonic all have similar patterns.

I really appreciate the insight. It isnt required to learn every single one, but it does help you up and down the fret board. Awesome.
Thanks alot guys.

well I would learn the major and minor and blues scales in all neck positions....you only need to learn it in one key casue you can move the root note to whatever key your in.... if your in A start on A if your in D start on D....the pattern is the same for all major keys and so forth...learn those 3 and your set...
