I thought this would be a new and somewhat interesting topic: What type of guitar picks do you use? ...and what type of songs do you like to play?

Personally, right now I'm just trying to start from the basics, learning scales and such, and also learning whatever song I can learn.

I used to only use Fender's Medium sized picks but I'm finding that I like using Dunlop Gator Grip Standard Picks (1.5mm) more.

...I'm mostly a rhythm player but I tend to use somewhat "thin" picks and prefer the #347 shape (1-pointed, almond shaped) pick for its smaller size...although I will sometimes use a #347 (3-pointed, rounded-triangular) to achieve somewhat "acoustic" sounds from my electric guitar.

...typically, the "thinner" the pick, the faster the response, but also the less volume...that's where "thick" picks really shine...they really make an acoustic "ring" and electrics "sing." For me, I've found the smaller, thinner pick is much more expressive (especially for chordal melody jazz playing).

...but, it will really depend upon: (a) you and (b) what music you play. Hard rock playing usually dictates a heavy-gauged pick, while lighter playing leans toward a lighter-gauge pick...the "shape," however,  is almost an "individuality" thing.

...and the DEVIL said: "...yes, but it's a DRY heat!"

Hi Sharon.  That's interesting as I also use the Dunlop Gator Grips 1.5mm.  Have one in my hand as I read your post.  I play mostly classic rock, lead and rhythm.  I didn't use to think that the type of pick made that much difference, but over the last several years, it seems that I find using anything else leaves me feeling vaguely uncomfortable.

Rock on!

Well I use thicker picks for Rock or power chords more in your face kind of sounds and thin nylon picks for the subtle sound
