Hi all,
New to the boards and new to the guitar...
Anyway, my question is about strumming patterns. I am following along with the AustralianGuitarist YouTube lessons mentioned elsewhere on the boards here. The instructor on the video teaches the 'down up up down up up down' pattern because it is apparently popular. Just how ubiquitous is this pattern? I'm having trouble hearing it in songs... I'm getting confused as to whether there's a change in chords or it's just different strumming patterns. I know it will probably get easier with time and experience, but I was just wondering if this is really the most common and what other patterns might be common, or why certain ones are better than others...?
Thanks in advance!

There are several threads about stum patterns on the board. Look at some of them and see if they answer your questions. Here is one of them: http://www.chordbook.com/cboard/viewtopic.php?id=342

Hi friends, may be this would sound odd but then I need to perfect this else I cant play well. I am trying to learn playing the acoustic guitar myself and even if I try there are hardly anyone known to me in my locality who can help me in this. My problem is whenever I am playing a chord I keep hitting the string that I am not supposed to. This keeps happening and am really frustrated with it. Want to know if after a certain point of time I would be able to overcome the problem instinctively or would this become a bad habit of mine. If so is there anything that I can do to overcome this problem? Your suggestions would be most appreciated.

Welcome to the board rahulb, yes, you will overcome hitting the wrong strings. Remember when you started typing and always hit the wrong letters? For me that stopped after a lot of typing and now I don't even have to look at the keys or my fingers anymore. Guess what...same for guitar !

So, to stop hitting the wrong strings keep practicing doing it the right way and don't get frustrated because in a year from now you'll remember asking about this and you'll laugh because you'll be playing chords properly with your eyes closed !

Cheers,

Well said Zen.  (gold star).   I concur,  there are threads on the board that have disscussed this issue,  the best answer is practice.

Jim

PS:  Good analogy btw......

Hey Jim ! Thanks bud, I get something right once in a while I guess...funny too, I wondered if you'd comment on my analogy...favorably to boot ! Thanks ! Yep OTM says it all the time so it must be true...'practice'.
