There it is jaguar, between you and guitarfreak and with the use of the words 'original', 'basis of learning scales', 'Ionian' and 'no sharps or flats' pretty much covers why I referred to 'mother scale'. The debate could end here unless someone far more learned than me(and there are tons) has something to add, otherwise, case closed I'm thinking. Anybody?
Cheers,
GuitarZen
EDIT: I finally found OTM's post that I was drawing on from memory when I mentioned the 'C major scale' as being the 'mother scale'. Here it is:

Read all of it if you like...it's good stuff but for the post I'm drawing on scroll down to

New to Guitar, just had first lesson from a friend, finger numbers and first three open strings (E--B--G) and three notes on the E or 1st string. Now with sore finger tips and not really sure if my hand/fingers will become flexable to do chords and bar chords, but I hope so.
Thats it for now and I am glad I found this web page.

Hello fellow guitarists,
I got involved with this site because there seemed to be some cool people here that should be able to help me
improve my guitar skills and artisanship. I'm hoping to gain more knowledge about the whole spectrum of guitar artisanship, basically scales and guitar theory. If anyone has any questions about guitar feel free to ask, I will help to the best of my ability.
Thank you.

Well I joined all of five minutes ago and looking forward to hanging around here for a while. I've been playing guitar for about two years now and I've gotten pretty comfortable around the neck and playing bar chords. Flat picking and finger picking so far have eluded me so I'm thinking about trying to find someone to take lessons from. [As a little side note, I also play the piano and violin and I can read notes and tabs so hopefully I'll be able to answer any questions you guys might have.
