Can you help a beginner out?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it means when I see "N.C" in musical notation? I've tried looking in the few books I've got and even Googled it but just got various things in North Carolina.

I've seen it in songbooks and in guitar magazines & it's left me scratching my head.

...I'm not 100% positive of your context, but usually it means NO CHORD.
