Hello Rich, I can't let your post go unanswered but since I'm considering pedals too, what I'm going to do is try some that are recommended by my music store. This is because I know little to nothing about them but I trust my music store folks and they'll let me try anything I want and if I don't like it, I can bring it back since they have lots of 'demo' equipment.

Barring that, you could go to your/a music store and try what they recommend. If I did that, I'd bring my amp and guitar so I'd 'know what I was going to get' ahead of buying. Some of the higher end pedals 'don't come easy' so to speak ! Hope some of this helps.

That is a good idea. Though when I have gone to my local music store I haven't seen much of a variety. Perhaps I should ask if they have anything else in stock that is not on display. Thanks.

Ok, good idea...I had another thought (oh boy)...what about googling 'Guitar effects pedals' and going to some of the sites ? You may be able to read a lot of product information that way. I tried it with those exact words and got .75m results...dat's a lot ! Let us know what you learn from trying that if you do Rich !

Cheers,

Boost and distortion tend to be different things.

Are you looking to boost to compensate for long cable runs? Are you looking to drive the front end of a tube amp? Are you looking for straight distortion, and if so what kind/genre?

If you're going for a good boost/overdrive (driving the front end of an amp) you can look at the Maxon OD808, Fulltone OCD, a Boss OD, any of the TS9 variants, etc. If you only want boost for solo volume increases or to compensate for long cable runs, there are a few out there. MXR makes a good one I think. If you want distortion I'd check out the Digitech Hardwire pedals. They're supposed to be pretty awesome. Which one works best for you will ultimately be subjective though.

I done told you already... you have to scoop the mids!

Now how did you know i haven't picked up a pedal yet Morty? I've been waiting and waiting for Rich to reply with what he got. I'm liking the talk about the digitech and i also like the pedal Bull_dog is building and may commision him to build me one like his. Also i like what i hear about the Dunlop Crybaby...from the original to some of the newer fancier models. You got pedals Morty? I don't even know why i want any effects pedals to start with but playing with the wah should be interesting....

It depends on what you're looking for, if you play metal Boss Metal Zone or Metal Core are for you, if you play rock Boss DS-1 or something similar, blues Boss Blues Driver. You don't HAVE to get Boss either but those are the only ones I know of.
