...for those who are curious, here's the foundation of the the CAGED chord system

http://home.comcast.net/~elmccaul/GTRS/CAGED.GIF

...the RED/PINK indicate the ROOT notes in each of the chord-shapes (key-of-C example); the BLACK indicate the other Major triad notes in the respective chord-shape.

...notice how each ROOT note (on E6, A5 and D4 strings) has two possible directions: UP (R-to-5) and DOWN (R-to-3)!

beth -- are you interested in the CAGED system, music theory in general, or both?  My first question to you is which do you prefer playing: single-notes (melody) or strumming chords (rhythm)?

beth -- do you want to continue into "theory" in this posting, or would you prefer that we begin in a new posting? That way the "title" might help others who are interested...because CAGED isn't about theory but about chord "shapes" being movable.

...I'm a rhythm person, who worked into chordal jazz, which is where the melody notes are played "out of" the chords...so, the whole song ends up being played as chords, with LOT's and LOT's of chord changes being made in order to get the melody note played as the last (highest) note played.

...as you can imagine, this is NOT a style of music for fast-paced rock-n-roll, but rather medium to slow songs.

...however, the music theory about those notes *IS* the same for melody or rhythm.

...take a look at this lesson about CAGED: http://www.gnat-notes.com/lessons/caged/

...and let me know if it makes sense to you or not.

...like I said, CAGED is mostly about "how" the 5 different chord-"shapes" are movable up/down the neck; knowing the 5 different "shapes" is very useful because it provides you with five "alternate" ways (and sometimes more) of playing each chord.

...the definition of a chord is three or more notes sounded simultaneously.

...a "voicing" is playing the same chord notes, but in different order. For instance, the simplest chord contains only three notes (called a "triad"): a ROOT(R), a THIRD(3), and a FIFTH(5). So, the different voicings possible are:

R, 3, 5 <---the "standard" bass to treble chord
3, 5, R <---the 1st "inversion" or voicing
5, R, 3 <---the 2nd "inversion" or voicing

...we'll begin with a new posting called "Music Theory 101," OK?
