Fender 1550 (0.011-0.048", wound 3rd) on my Telecaster (ground-wound strings)
D'Addario EHR310 (0.010-0.046") on my Gibson ES-135LE (half-round strings)
D'Addario EFT15 (0.010-0.047") on my Ovation Balladeer ("Flat-Top" strings)
Lay's S.I.T. Strings GL1048 (0.010-0.048") on my Ovation EA68 Viper ("Silencer" rolled-top strings)

* ROUND-wound strings have BEST tone and BRIGHTNESS, but also most finger-sqweek noise...best for rock, classsic guitar sounds.

* FLAT-wound strings have LEAST tone and brightness, but also LEAST finger-sqweek noise...best for jazz and standard guitar sounds.

* GROUND-, flat-top, rolled-top and half-round strings have INTERMEDIATE tone and brightness as well as INTERMEDIATE finger-sqweek noise...best compromise string (IMHO).

...my experience has been that nickel ground-wound strings give me 90% of the TONE and 20% of the finger sqweek of round-wound strings, or almost (80%) as quiet as flat-wounds, for best "all-around" compromise use.

Hey everyone. Got turned on to this board by someone from another late board so I figured I'd give it a shot.

Anyway, long story short I've played a lot of strings. Right now I'm using:

DR 10-52, D Standard - B.C. Rich Deluxe Jr. V
DR 10-52, Dropped C - LTD Alexi-600
D'Addario 12-54 - Ibanez VBT700

I don't think I'll be changing any time soon as A) Setting up a Floyd is a pain, and B) I really dig how DRs sound with active pickups.

hey there fellow las vegan,
I believe that would be me who recommended this site to you. There's lots of cool people here from beginners to Masters and a cool chat room, chord finder, and scale generator. So welcome aboard, and I hope you enjoy yourself. And for staying on topic I use Fender lite Bullets in my squier strat (keeps in tune even when i get wild on the whammy) and Ibanez strings that came on my bass.

(BTW nice axes!)

Bob

whatever are laying around cheap and available . i like to keep new ones on my instruments i love that bright sound of new strings. but i pprefffer super slinkies as many have suggested also ghs boomers
and eddie van halen used to make a line of strings that i liked 5150s or something like that
recently i tried some of thos e smooth jazz strings and i am curios about them myself what someone might have to say about them and yes i realize they have a flatter sound.

gutarace and TR,

Strings are not just strings. Other than the string gauge, what they are made of and how they are made make a big difference. Look at the link below:

http://www.playrecord.net/resource/arti … trings.php

this link explains the different properties of the string material (what they are made of) of the types of sounds they make.

for example, when Ernie Ball super slinky (electric guitar string) is mentioned, it usually refers to a nickle wound string most of the time. The "Slinky" line also comes in coated titanium, reinforced, pure nickle, and stainless steel flavors.

Most brand of strings companies offer strings made of different materials.

There is also a huge difference between acoustic and electric guitar strings. There are also a lot of different types of and materials used in acoustic strings.

String gauge also has an effect on the sound not just the playability.
