man oh man i had no idea there were so many differences in guitar strings....but aren't they kinda small? i mean, does the different kind of metal really make that big of a dif? but, that does explain why people get certain strings. i'm still not really that good at the guitar, so maybe if i get really good, and famous, then i'll become picky about my strings and guitar.

Regardless of guitar skill level, change your strings a few times (different types of materials and gauges) and you will be able to tell hear the difference. Even I , the rookie, can tell. I think there are more noticeable differences with different acoustic strings than with electric.

i have noticed that though, the fact that old strings sound terrible compaird to new strings. i changed mine just recently, and my guitar sounds better.

...two major causes for strings to "wear out" are stretch and fret dimples.

...stretch doesn't happen suddenly, but rather builds up as the strings get played (playing adds vibrating tension to the already stretched string)...it's accumulative.

...fret dimples are worn spots on the bottom of the strings (both plain and wound!) where the frets have worn away small amounts of the strings...this causes the string to vibrate like a bunch of "links" connected together rather than as a single string...how fast this occurs depends on how vigoruous you are at fretting and string bending. Slide you finger 'under' one of your strings and you'll feel what I'm describing...the more worn the dimples are, the badder the strings will sound.

As I'm one to do, I changed the strings I use recently. I'm now using the following:

ESP/LTD Alexi-600 --- 12-54
Right now the set is a third wound. It's a 12-52 set with a 54 on the low end. I'm going to try a set with a plain 3rd and see which I like more. This guitar is tuned to C Standard.

B.C. Rich Deluxe V --- 11-52
While D'Addario makes a native 11-52 set, I don't like some of the gauges they put in it. This one is the low three strings from a 10-52 set and the top three strings from a 10-49 set. The resulting strings are 11, 14, 18, 30, 42, 52. This guitar is tuned to D Standard.

Ibanez V-Blade --- 10-49
The other strings from the aforementioned sets make up this set. The resulting gauges are 10, 13, 17, 28, 38, 49. This guitar is tuned to E Standard.

All strings are D'Addario. I moved away from DR for two reasons. The least of which is they're more difficult to find locally. The big reason is that 10-56 is the heaviest set they make. 11 is the heaviest high string they make. While I quite enjoyed the 11-50 and 10-52 sets for E and D, there was no set that would lend itself to C tunings. And since DR strings have a looser feel than other strings the 10-52 set just didn't work for C standard. Since restringing all the axes with D'Addarios I've been real happy with the tone from all three guitars (even though I still play the Alexi more by a long shot).
