metal and blues? hmmm, i can only think of 2 guitars that make that transition on a regular basis; Les Pauls and Stratocasters. And i believe both gibson/epiphone and fender have models available in that price range.

if you want something cheap that will play blues and metal get a les paul, or a straocaster with a humbucker

In a previous post OTM listed various guitar types recommended for different music styles. Solid body guitars, especially those with humbuckers, can easily play both blues and metal. I have both LP and Fat Strat and my Angus loving son had to have an SG for Christmas, they all work.
The instrument needs to fit your hands like a lover, the sound you want to hear is going to come from the amp you run it through. As GZ keeps saying, go to the music store and try the stuff out until you get the right gear for your feel and sound.
Good Luck

i recommend an Epiphone Les Paul i have one and it does metal and blues very well, also plays great, the only problem with the Les paul is upper fret access takes some practice getting used too. oh that and there kinda heavy

i've got 2 epiphone g-400 sg's and think theyre great for the price. I think you can get one for about 400.00. Never played the epi les paul but if the quality is as good as the sg theyed be fine. Mine sounds and plays great.
