true, it's pretty hard to do "free bird" on expert when you're using the grim reaper's star power...welcome to the chordbord madam mustard (awesome name, and very catchy). how long you played guitar?

Thanks for the welcome, glad you like my name.
And as for your question I have been playing guitar for about two years.

Hey I know the feeling, on another forum where I used to live for a while [seriously
] there were like ten new people every day. I was the one girl welcoming committee.
Heh, pretty much every style of guitar that I hear I'm into. Since I'm a total country music fanatic I originally picked up the guitar so I could play along with my favorite songs. That was a pretty good foundation for me, and when I started going to bluegrass jam sessions it really gave me a leg up knowing almost all the chords that they used there. I stayed like that for a while, learning a new country song off the internet now and then and it was all good. But after my dad got me Rockband 2, and two electric guitars I've kind of been exploring my more rock 'n roll/alternative shredding side. I must admit it's been fun, and I'm sure my mom just loves all the noise I've been making.
I've decided that if I want to get better though I'm gonna have to start practicing scales, it'll make flatpicking and fingerstye guitar that much easier.

haha, nice job. maybe you could start another welcoming committee here too....sounds like you had a pretty solid learning plan for the guitar. that's pretty much what i did for a while, but now i like playing harder, more rocky songs. my mom doesn't like listening to those, but she does like my finger picking (my favorite style). can i meet your dad? i want some electric guitars....really, really, really bad. somewhere in the "gear and equipment" section, there's a topic that's called "what's your dream guitar". there, you can show your dad my most favoratist guitar. XD

at the very least guitar hero, and all instrument based games just possible could inspire some kid in giving the real guitar try and who knows that kid might become a great muscian.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band have at least served one useful purpose: exposing more people to different genres that they never would have listened to if not for the video games. It is true that many people, including my best friend, would be contending for guitar virtuosity status if they had spent all their time practicing real guitar instead of pushing buttons on a fake one. However, I read a report a while back about how those video games inspired more people to pick up real instruments, either drums or guitar. If that's true, then maybe Guitar Hero is a necessary evil. Anything that creates more music in the world isn't a bad thing.

Thanks guys. I was an expert on Guitar Hero before I finally realized my true guitar calling a couple months ago. I only play at parties now, and I spend more time on the real fretboard now than I did back in the day practicing pushing down buttons. cricketrider said it the best, instead of getting a score on a video game, you could use the same time to practice real guitar and gain something that you will carry with you the rest of your life.
