On an electric guitar, where does sustain come from?
Is it the amp?
Brand of strings?
Kind of wood the guitar is made of?
being self taught is fine,,,, ,,as long as you do not have a dummy for a teacher.

ok paul sustain comes from a 1 piece neck the best. carvins and expensive les pauls are 2 that come to mind. for strat guys turn the tone knobs all the way down and get a heavier left handed vibrato technique. oh and another thing Get Back To Work Paul!!!
Oops forgot a compressor/limiter can also increase sustain.

you COULD install a sustainer pickup. I have one factory installed in my Jackson PC-1 Phil Collen Electric Guitar. The other guitarist in my band had one installed in his Ibanez JEM77, theres some routering and modifying the electronics but if you have an experienced guitar technician do it you won't have a problem. good luck

I have also heard that having the action set higher will give you more sustain.
