Hello to all. I am new to cordbook.com and new to the guitar. I was wondering if there is a better type of strings e.i., light, med, etc. a beginner should use to make playing a little easier?

everything you ever wanted to know about strings:

Yes a lighter gauge string is easier on the fingers but does in fact effect the tone. (which you may or may not like)
check out the link above and try out different strings until you find what you like. strings a pretty cheap.

Welcome to chordbook vinpal, well you've gotten some good info already, so I don't have much to add except it will help knowing what guitar you're playing. I don't know if any makers recommend not using lighter strings but I know one that recommends not using heavier strings.
Once we know what git you have, there may be other ways to make it easier to play/fret. For example, if things are adjustable, you may benefit from having the action checked. Something a lot of makers websites detail out for their guitars are the measurements that you'll find at certain places on the guitar if it's set up correctly. Everything helps when it's right it seems.

Hi Jen,
Bought it from one of those great shopping channels. It's a Esteban acoustic.

I've seen those guitars vinpal...does it have any adjustments anywhere besides the tuners? Is there a website associated with the guitar maker perhaps?

Only tuner adjustments. I will check for a web site.

Ok vinpal, let us know what you learn...Esteban makes those guitars sound really sweet on the shopping channel here when that happens from time to time.
Cheers,
