Can anyone please explain to me what all the different types of chords are for, what they mean, and where they come from??? Like you have the basic Cmaj chord. Then in the virtual chordbook you can choose many different variations of the C chord. Such as Csus4, C9, Csus7, Cadd2 etc. What does the "sus4" and "sus7" and "9" and "add2" mean and what relation does it have to finger placement ?? Just a simple explaination would do. I've been playing for a while but i always just play by tablature so i never learned how to read actual music. And i've seen these variations quite often but i just do what the tablature tells me to and dont ask any questions. So i was just wondering what it all means ??? Any help would be MUCH appreciated !!!

...there are basically two types of chords: (A) TRIADS (3-notes) composed of ROOT, 3rd, 5th degree notes; and (B) all "other" chords!
...under "other" chords, there are TETRAchords (4-notes) which contain ROOT, 3rd, 5th, and 7th degree notes; and, there are "extensions" to the TETRAchords, which can contain up to 7 notes (a "full" 13th chord, for example).
...oh, there's also the "two note" power chords (A5, etc.), which aren't REALLY chords because, by definition, a CHORD is three or more harmoneous notes played simultaneously.
...if you're interested, look through GuitarZens' "How To" make any G chord postings; many of your questions are addressed there.

Thanks Old Tele man, sounds like you know a LOT about music in general from other response i've read from you to other peoples questions. I might need you assistance in the near future as i am getting ready to finally dive into learning scales and different keys and all the meanings behind all the different chord variations. I took a music theory class once in high school, but that was a long time ago and i didnt care enough then to pay close attention. So i hope you'll be around to help answer some future questions i might have.... Thanks again
