Hi, I'm new here - I just got my first guitar last Sunday!  I know a few chords but that's about it.  Any suggestions on what books to get to learn from?  There are so many I don't know what's good and what's not.  Or should I just look into lessons?  Any recommendations would be helpful!
Thanks!

Hi and welcome, I don't have any knowledge of what books might be helpful except that the ones we had 25 years ago were garbage. However this website has a chord finder, scale finder and a dozen experienced guitarists who are always willing to help. If lessons are affordable  and you can get an instructor who reads music then by all means take the lessons

Ladyjulie,

I learned from "Mel Bay" books many many moons ago. I hear they are still around. I started with the advanced chord book, and the grade 1 theory book, and worked from there. No instructor (but that would have been a definate plus), and no such thing as Internet either.
Like Bobo says, there are many here willing to help. All ya need do is ask.

Welcome to the site, and enjoy..

Check out the chat room, ya may catch a few of us in there from time to time..

My suggestions are to talk to a friend who plays guitar or an instructor, so you can go over your musical goals and come up with the best game plan. Also, continue to exchange comments and learn from these forums. There are also many cool guitar instruction web pages out there you can learn from. My web site is a plain one, still being finished, but the videos simulate what it would be like for you to be sitting in a lesson face to face with an instructor for a lesson. Learn something from every one you can. They all have something a little different you can learn from. We are all excited when we hear of a person who wants to learn how to play the guitar.

My bad, of course Scott is correct there is an absolute wealth of free instructional stuff on the net.  Hit me up and I'll link you to a dozen or so including Scott's.

hey guys i really like this sight it is geared toward teaching and is really a good beginner site
my suggestion is take note particularrly of the pentatonic modes if you learn these five scales you can pull of a blues solo to almost any I IV V chord porgression hope that helps.
ps mel bay is still good thier stuff is kind of hard but worth learning.
also one of my tricks is to pick a tab book that has some songs you like and try to learn them. this gives you instant gratification and that is worth something i am sure!

Every rule has an exception. Especially this one.
if my calculations are correct SLINKY + ESCULATOR = EVERLASTING FUN

well lessons r good but exspensive sometimes (sadly) What i did is just teach myself look up songs that i like on UltimateGuitar.com or 911tabs.com .... (if u read tabs) and ive now been playing bass for about a year and a half and so far it has brought me good this far.. but if u have the money lessons might be better  ur choice.......... and welcome to chordbook

Hello Julie ... here's a great site I've used and countless others ... I have yet to find a better site to learn from:  www.justinguitar.com

Everything you need to learn for a beginner is located there ... it's a donation site Justin Sanderco created but well worth it
