I've been wondering about the best way to go about recording some tunes on a budget, and this looks all right to me: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/DVForge/GUITARPLUG/. Would this sound better than recording with a decent mic?

I don't know anything about the Guitar Plug thing but I was hoping someone that does would say something about it by now cosialesato. But maybe that's an answer come to think of it. No one saying anything about it I mean...maybe no one that posts here knows. Just a thought.

I'm thinking though, wouldn't using the direct input from the guitar and playing onto recording software like GarageBand be better than using a mic that isn't $400?

Hoss is right, using mic's is the way to go.. Direct lines dont capture the ambiance of an amplifier or an acoustic with a PU on it like a good mic can. $400.00 is kind of middle of the road price wise for a good mic.
We used $1200.00 Newmans in the studio, along with many other types.

Sounds like a mic is the way to go, thanks guys. I'll spend $15 on a USB adapter and bust out some serious change when I go for the best sound.

Well there is another solution, Line6, makes affordable instrument to computer interface devices. My Line6 Toneport GX only cost $49 USD, it can emulate literally hundreds of amp/effects combos, has tutorials covering every style of music and every guitar player, has hundreds of tabs and jam tracks from famous acts covering all genres and of course its a line in to use for any recording software including Audacity which is open sourced and free.

Hey Bob, thanks a lot for the reply. I went to the Line 6 web site and looked around for the Toneport GX and couldn't find what you were talking about. That's what I'm looking for though: something to jam with on my laptop and try out different effects/amps without spending over $100 or so. I'm pretty new to the electric guitar world, but it's become my world since a few months ago.

Here's a TonePort UX8, but it added another 4 on to the front of the price you bought yours for. That's a pretty hefty difference.

Well, it appears that my toneport GX has been discontinued. It's replacement costs an additional $50 USD and comes with 8 track recording software which will cost me an additional $99 USD so this is the better deal:
