I just wanted to start a discussion to find out everyones different opinions on this. What kind of plectrums (or picks) do YOU use? I know to some new members it is kind of wierd, but, they make all the difference. I use Planet Waves black ice 0.80 mm. They are a bit bigger than Dunlop Jazz III picks and I love them.

I just started using V-Picks. A guy named Vinnie makes them. They are made of acrilic...sp? After playing for a bit, they really stick to your fingers, then you can relax more and get faster! You can see them in Guitar Player magazine in the Gear section. I was always a medium pick user, and these are really thick but tapered. Won't use anything else....they are expensive though, like $4.00 a pick. Don't lose them!!!

They actually stick to your finger, which is great for me because I lost feeling in my fingers right where I hold the pick, before I found these I was using Gorilla Snot....a real product by the way.

i like these picks  called star picks. Basically  they have a star shape punched out of them for grip

It is better to try and fail then never to try at all

You only should compete with your self

I use Dunlop Ultex jazz 3's best pick Ive ever used, has all the speed and precision of the regular Jazz 3's but with a way better grip, they feel like frosted/sanded glass.

...other than the one-time(!) that I tried hole-punching the center of my guitar picks (with dubious results: they often broke or cracked), I've found that 'best' approach is the 'simplist' so I just use plain-jane flat picks...of the popular "45" (teardrop) shape...thin for jazz, med or heavy for "loud" rhythm playing.

...just my 2ยข contribution, obviously YMMV.

I like orange picks. Somebody gave me an orange one with a star shaped hole and though i like it, i drop it more than the flat orange picks.

I'm with Jrb415. I like the Dunlop Ultex Jazz IIIs for the same reasons. I will use the normal Jazz IIIs (black and red) if I run out of the Ultex picks. Nobody carries them around here so they have to be ordered online.

I'll Stick to fender medium's, they give me a "flex" , like when I roll from one chord to another, they give me a sense of control.I also like the way they feel on the strings.

don't b flat, don't b sharp= just B natural!!!!

For a "newbie", I use SOFT picks.  My coach showed me how to make them out of CRISCO can lid material.  I use another pick as a pattern, cut out the soft plastic then wrap soft tape around the wide end of the it.  It's nice and soft but the tape gives it good grip.  thesoftness of the pick doesn't acdentuate the "slap" of the pick on the strings.  The sound stays nice and mellow which is what I like.
