Hi ST,
Welcome to the site. As far as playing a right handed guitar, Jimi Hendrix did it. He just strung it upside down. But I would suggest (if money permits) to purchase a mid grade left handed guitar, and learn that way. Inexpensive left handed guitars can be hard to find, but they are out there if you look hard enough.
There area quite a few lefties on this site. I'm sure they will have something to add to this subject.
Check out the chat room too..

welcome aboard st dude. i'm sure you'll enjoy yourself on chordbook. in answer to your question....look up, hehe. no really, i think jaguar took my answer. look real hard for an inexpensive leftie guitar, and start on that. peace.

Welcome to chordbook supertramp, short answer, try to find a decent lefty to start. If you can't, why not try a right handed guitar to start...ask the guitar store to loan/rent/front you one for a couple of weeks...you know, something used but halfway decent. I'd say an acoustic also. If it feels ok and you're learning chords and strumming ok...why not? If i'm all wrong (since i'm not a lefty) then i hope someone has info that says this can't be done.
Why i suggest this in the first place is because though right handed, i shoot pool and use a bow and arrow left handed and it just seems awkward any other way. The reason i play pool and shoot a bow left handed is because
that's how i learned. I din't know this until later. Guitar was right handed and trying it left handed, though it seems awkward and foreign, i believe i could do it after a while. hope some of this helps !

I'm basically a righthanded person. However, I swing a baseball bat left handed yet golf right handed. I would think I would try to play RIGHT handed if I could. Just as with golf, there are more opportunities and equipment available for "Righties". If it works GREAT; if not you can switch to LEFTIE but have a harder time finding equipment to fit you.
Good Luck in whatever you decide and KEEP IT FUN!!!!

Hey!
Im a lefty also, i have found some cheap left handed guitars around.
One site i have seen is www.lefthandedguitars.co.uk (i dont know if they will ship to france so i would ask).
This site is excellent for learning guitar, i changed the options to lefty, so now i can see chords on how im meant to play them, you can do it with scales to! So when i have a problem i normally come here.
I hope you pursue playing guitar as a lefty, as theres not many of us here ![]()

Thanks Conor...i din't think to remind about being able to switch the chord finder and the scales section to lefty...that has to be very useful for those of you that are left handed.
Cheers,

Welcome Supertramp. I am an old lefty beginner. I did manage to find some lefty gear both acoustic and electric and I have never been happier with my choices. I never tried righty it felt very awkward to me. When I first tried guitar it was with an upside down righty restrung. I could never get the hang of transposing all the chords to lefty became frustrated and sold my guitar. Fast forward thirty years. New lefty guitar and now there are sites like this that can do all the work for you and there are some books around Left Hand Guitar Method by Troy Stetina(Hal Leonard) and the Left Hand Chordbook(Mel Bay) that help. All the best.

ST,
If your going to use a right handed guitar, dont forget the strings have to reverse strung... Backwards.. The nut may have to be reversed also to accomidate the low E string now being where the high E string was. And the bridge will require adjustment as well.
